At this morning’s Occupy Wall Street rally, after the stay of (possible) eviction, I found myself next to Carl Davidson – a storied union organizer who told me that the Pittsburg Occupation will kick off October 15.
As in New York, the Pittsburg occupation began planning in a general assembly of about 100 students.
“It’s a new level of activism for them,” said veteran activist Davidson, noting how green they are to political activity. “Even the anarchists are saying this is very disorganized,” he said, with a chuckle.
They recently got an injection of activist experience from the United Steelworkers. The union had endorsed Occupy Wall Street on September 19, but they just joined the Pittsburg activists “a couple of days ago.”
The venue is still in discussion – narrowed down to either Point Park – a symbolically rich point downtown, or Schenley Park – closer to the universities.
What will the turnout be? “I have no idea,” said Davidson – echoing what the Wall Street occupiers were saying even days before the September 17 action.
